By the evening, Gracie had finished her den and Isla had checked on the water voles. She hadn’t spotted them, though – perhaps they were still exploring, she thought. After the Animal Adventure Club told some more silly ghost stories with their torches under their chins, they all went to bed.

Isla lay in her sleeping bag with her eyes wide open. It was windy outside now, but she wasn’t worried about the noise, or even that the tent might blow away. She was worried about the red squirrel kits.

What if their mother doesn’t come back? she thought. How on earth are those little things going to survive? Her mind drifted to her little mouse Tattie too. Isla hated it when animals were unwell or in danger. It made her feel so helpless. No matter how hard she tried to think about happy things, she just couldn’t get to sleep.
